K-P Govt Expands Health Card
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has made a significant step by expanding its health card coverage. The addition of free bone marrow transplant, cochlear implant, and thalassemia treatment will greatly benefit deserving patients, allowing them to receive these costly treatments without financial burden. Previously, the health card only covered kidney and liver transplants, which had been suspended for two years due to financial constraints.
However, the K-P Govt Expands Health Card by not only resuming kidney and liver transplants but also including treatments for more complex conditions. A proposal regarding this expansion has been sent to the cabinet, and financial consultations have been completed. Additionally, a new fund is being established to ensure that poor individuals receive timely and consistent medical care.

Under this project, this treatment will be provided in various government and private hospitals. Cochlear implant and thalassemia treatment will be done at Hayatabad Medical Complex, while Institute of Kidney Diseases Hospital has been selected for kidney transplant. Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital, Islamabad has been selected for liver and bone marrow transplant. The government has also announced that free medicines will be provided to the patients for one year after the transplant.
This scheme is great news for the poor and deserving families. The expensive treatments that were earlier available only to the rich will now be completely free for the deserving. The government says that the kidney and liver transplant process will resume in the next two months, which will give a new life to thousands of patients.

Restoration of Kidney and Liver Transplants
Previously, kidney and liver transplants were being conducted under the Health Card scheme. However, due to a lack of funds, the caretaker government suspended these free treatments for nearly two years. Now, the PTI government has decided not only to restore these services but also to include additional costly treatments, ensuring that deserving patients receive the best possible healthcare.
Approval Process and Financial Proposals
A summary for the Health Facility Program has been sent to the Cabinet for approval. The Finance Department has also provided its recommendations, while consultations with experts and hospitals have been completed. According to sources, an appropriation fund will be set up similar to Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan, ensuring continuous funding for these expensive treatments.

Government Approves 10 Billion PKR Fund
To kickstart the initiative, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved 10 billion PKR in reserve funds, which will initially be used to restore kidney transplants. Sources indicate that government hospitals will be given priority for these free treatments so that more patients can benefit from the program.
Hospitals Selected for Free Treatment
- Cochlear Implant and Thalassemia treatment will be provided at Hayatabad Medical Complex, benefiting children under five years who suffer from hearing and speech impairments.
- Kidney transplants will be conducted at the Institute of Kidney Diseases Hospital.
- Liver and Bone Marrow transplants will take place at Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital, Islamabad.
Free Medicines and Additional Facilities
To further support deserving patients, the government plans to provide free medicines for one year after the transplant. Additionally, priority will be given to patients with a PMT score of 37 or lower, ensuring that only the most deserving individuals receive treatment.

Implementation Plan and Future Strategy
The government is working on a long-term financial strategy to sustain these costly treatments and prevent future funding shortages. According to sources, kidney and liver transplants will be fully restored within the next two months across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
